Microsoft® Office Business Applications (OBA) wurden entwickelt um Informationen direkt in Office integrieren zu können, was eine erhöhte Produktivität zur Folge hat, indem eine nahtlose, integrierte End-to-End Benutzererfahrung in Office Applikationen realisiert werden kann. Bei OBA ist also das Gestaltungs-paradigma entweder Dokumente zu erweitern oder Add-Ins für eine spezifische Office Applikation zu schreiben. OBAs sind Erweiterungen von Einzeloffice-Applikationen (Word, Excel®, Outlook® etc.) auf Basis von managed code (.NET) zur Anpassung und Erweiterung von nur jeweils einer Office-Applikation. Die Auswahl für welche Office Anwendung das geschehen soll, muss deshalb bereits am Anfang getroffen werden. Dies bedeutet im Ergebnis, dass für jede Office-Anwendung und auch für jede Office Version jeweils eine eigenständige OBA entwickelt, gewartet und über den gesamten Lebenszyklus organisiert werden muss.

Next Generation of OBA

Microsoft® Office Business Applications (OBA) were originally conceived to help with information integration in Microsoft® Office and they did so with some success. However, the OBA approach has numerous limitations: one must take into account the different object models of the Microsoft® Office suite applications and attend to their various programming structures. OBAs are therefore extensions of individual Office applications (Microsoft® Word, Microsoft® Excel ®, Microsoft® Outlook® etc.) based on managed code (.NET), rather than a flexible, configurable integration framework. Furthermore, a stand-alone OBA must be developed, maintained and organized over the entire life cycle not only for each Office application but also for each release version. This can quickly become a complex versioning challenge.
